Fundamental issues of artificial intelligence
Müller V. (ed), Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2016. 570 pp.  Type: Book (978-3-319264-83-7)

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been around for several decades and it has seen a resurgence recently, mainly because of increases in computing power and algorithms becoming increasingly refined. Having access to an enormous amount of data also facilitates easy decision-making processes. This book is a collection of 33 papers that are organized in sections titled “Computing,” “Information,” “Cognition and Reasoning,” “Embodied Cognition,” and “Ethics.” The papers are theoretical and use mathematical proofs to verify computing idioms. I was expecting some papers on self-driving cars and their applications using machine learning. Unfortunately, I did not see any papers in this area.

The papers on robotics and their applications are interesting and of significant interest to researchers. The papers of this book are for those with a theoretical mindset, like those in academia, and not for industry experts. The book will need a layer of translation before it can be used for applications in industry. A lot of emphasis is placed on ethics, which is logical given that the book tackles fundamental issues in AI. How AI can be used for face recognition, genetics, and in medical fields raises a lot of questions; the book attempts to address many of them. It is a deep study and anyone interested in Alan Turing and AI will find a lot of interesting material. Doctoral candidates can use the book to spin off ideas and think about open issues. The many reference papers can serve as a wealth of information as well. I highly recommend this book for those in academia.
