Characteristics of social media stories
AlNoamany Y., Weigle M., Nelson M. International Journal on Digital Libraries17 (3):239-256,2016.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Nov 9 2016

Through its portrayal of social media in an archival review, this paper attempts to decipher “what makes a story good.” In order to do this, the paper identifies popular “human-generated” posts. The concept that a timeline of popular entries made by individuals would be something that many users would enjoy is popular with present-day social media users.

Storify, the proposed platform, features a myriad of familiar elements that are present in today’s social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. This is important, as people will likely be more hesitant to use something that they are not familiar with. As mentioned in the “What does a popular story look like?” section, it will be essential to identify what makes a story popular and to determine how to classify one as such. As suggested, labeling a story as popular could be determined by subscriber count, viewer or audience reach, and by comparing it to other stories by the same person or someone similar. Through the use of Archive-It in collaboration with Storify, it is evident that some popular stories contain features that are not present in either platform. Why some stories from Twitter would not appear on Archive-It, or vice-versa, should be explored further.
