Immersive visualization and course-of-action simulation: towards a decision support simulation system for data driven businesses
Tolk A., Dandashi F., Haberlin R., Chin S.  ANSS 2016 (Proceedings of the 49th Annual Simulation Symposium, Pasadena, CA, Apr 3-6, 2016)Article-No. 19.2016.Type:Proceedings
Date Reviewed: Aug 9 2016

A generic decision-making (DM) algorithm involves collecting sensory data, forming a visualization, mapping the visualization results to known or “need to learn” scenarios, presenting possible solutions, and selecting courses of action (COAs). This paper by Tolk et al. gives an overview of a MITRE Corporation platform that would enable a user to simulate and revisualize COAs. The platform is a collection of visualization tools (collectively called immersive visualization). DM and immersive visualization use a model-centric approach and a special language called SysML. To justify the use of SysML, the authors discuss their earlier work and identify the process and data heterogeneity to be core issues in DM.

The paper highlights the authors’ current research approach, development platform, and some features of SysML. The discussion on SysML and the platform, however, is quite cursory. It could be because the source of funding for the work is the Department of Defense.

I did not find this paper to be inspiring. However, it could interest a reader who wants to become familiar with the current state of affairs in the field.
