With the proliferation of social networks and cloud computing, increasing amounts of data are generated and stored in the cloud. The Internet of Things, online transactions, e-commerce, and so on also contribute to the vast accumulation of data. How to utilize that huge amount of data is very important. That is why big data research and development has attracted so much attention lately. But the tools and methods to analyze data lag behind the generation of data, especially on the system side; due to its tremendous quantities, architecture for dealing with big data must be built first. This book aims to explain the networking system for handling big data. It is a timely book for the big data community.

Each of the book’s four parts--“Introduction of Big Data,” “Networking Theory and Design for Big Data,” “Networking Security for Big Data,” and “Platforms and Systems for Big Data Applications”--has four or five chapters written separately by experts in related fields. The style and depth of content are consistent throughout the book. The editors put in a great effort to make it concordant.

One of the most intriguing big data problems is figuring out how we can benefit from it, once it is collected and stored. The book doesn’t seem to address this. That is, when we have the big data network installed and up and running, what is next? We know big data application is hard. A single book cannot answer all the questions. Nevertheless, we need a book to guide users from the beginning to the end of using big data.

Application aside, this book does indeed cover all of the problems that may arise when building a big data network. Big data engineers can learn a lot from this book.
