Learn Excel 2016 for OS X
Hart-Davis G., Apress, New York, NY, 2015. 399 pp. Type: Book (978-1-484210-20-8)
Date Reviewed: Jun 22 2016

The current version of Excel comes with so many bells and whistles that it’s really difficult, if not impossible, to claim that one knows it fully. This book covers only the most common and basic features of the software. If your aim is to tinker with some of Excel’s not-so-common features, then this book is ideal for you and you won’t be disappointed. It follows a step-by-step, handheld approach to coach you into using the software; at the end of your study and practice, you should feel confident in handling the software with some expertise. In the later chapters of the book, some of the more sophisticated built-in functions of Excel are introduced.

Overall, the book follows an easy-to-comprehend style. It is written from the perspective of a learner and may do well as a textbook for an undergraduate class if a comprehensive set of accompanying spreadsheets is included; on its own, it lacks in that aspect. Rather, I would suggest one look at the book by Parsons and colleagues [1]. For advanced applications, such as online analytical processing (OLAP), I would strongly recommend the experts’ book on the topic by Smart [2]. Before republication, the publishers should correct the numerous spelling errors.
