Internet connectivity for mobile ad hoc network: a survey based study
Attia R., Rizk R., Ali H. Wireless Networks21 (7):2369-2394,2015.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Apr 19 2016

This paper is a survey of mobile ad hoc network (MANET) Internet connectivity, which is perceived by many researchers as an interesting architectural model. The starting point is MANET and its challenges. Anyone who has worked in the MANET area knows that managing Internet protocol (IP) addresses, especially in the case of split/merge operations, can be very complex and can have a high impact on each node’s energy consumption. This is the context in which the larger Internet can offer support. For example, recent work shows that cloud management of MANETs can bring many benefits. Unfortunately, these latest developments are not included in the survey.

MANET Internet routing is comprehensively discussed. However, choosing the kind of Internet gateway as the classification criterion for surveyed projects creates an artificial list. Although the gateway plays an important role in connecting a MANET to the Internet, there are other key aspects generally managed by middleware that need to be considered, such as resource management, scalability, session management, and so on.

On a positive note, the survey includes a large number of papers/projects that are presented in sufficient detail. In this respect, the paper can be useful to those starting research in this area.
