Biomedical engineering : frontier research and converging technologies
Jo H., Jun H., Shin J., Lee S., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2015. 511 pp. Type: Book (978-3-319218-12-0)
Date Reviewed: Feb 5 2016

Biomedical engineering is a maturing field characterized by a new generation of researchers capable of readily spanning engineering, medicine, and biology. This edited collection of timely review papers is by multidisciplinary researchers with strong clinical links and consequently is a significant addition to the comparatively sparse, when compared to older engineering disciplines, systematic literature in the field. It has six themed sections that address fast-moving components of biomedical engineering: nanotechnology and nanomedicine; regenerative medicine; organ-on-a-chip; biomechanics, mechanobiology and disease; biomedical devices and imaging for diagnostics and therapeutics; and robotics and informatics in healthcare. The endorsement of the book by the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association and the Korean-American Biomedical Engineering Society reflects the authorship of the papers.

While each of the individual reviews presents the status of individual hot topics and the key areas for future research, the editors of the book have missed a significant opportunity to summarize the status of the overall field and key ways forward. The preface to the book is a single paragraph, and there is no introduction. Also, given that many of the authors of individual reviews are academically based, it is perhaps unsurprising that there is little regulatory context or content; however, this is a key omission in what is a translation-oriented collection of overviews. Academic readers of the book should be encouraged to take account of the regulations in each hot-topic area and how these are applied to product development and clinical evaluation.
