The Internet of Things
Greengard S., The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2015. 232 pp. Type: Book (978-0-262527-73-6)
Date Reviewed: Nov 12 2015

Aimed at guiding a tour through the emerging Internet of Things (IoT), this book is intended to provide insight from a sociological perspective. Engineers will find a different view of what they are used to, that is, aspects that IoT technologies influence from a sociological point of view.

The book consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1 introduces IoT; chapter 2 examines the impact of mobility and cloud computing, which unlock the value of IoT; and chapter 3 introduces industrial Ethernet and machine-to-machine communication. Chapter 4 looks at the growing of smart consumer devices and services that redefine how one interacts with the world, and chapter 5 looks in depth the practical and technical challenges of building IoT, such as the need for more advanced hardware and software. In my opinion, chapter 6 is very important as it regards sociological aspects concerning risks and problems associated with a connected world. Finally, in chapter 7, the author speculates about what our future may become and how IoT will impact society.

Having such a well-structured work gives one the means to start to think about IoT, making readers aware of the fact that all of the technologies used will also create major problems, which are well identified and characterized.

Anyone who wants to learn about the pros and cons of this “new thing” called the Internet of Things should read this book.
