Windows 10 is the next major upgrade to Microsoft’s Windows operating system (OS). This short book provides an overview of the major features and operating differences users of existing versions of Windows might find in this newest release. It covers the following topics:

  • Microsoft’s focus for the new OS; what users can expect regarding the upgrade process and pricing; and reasons why one would wish to upgrade.

  • How Windows 10 will function on different devices, personal computers (PCs), tablets, gaming consoles, and smartphones, including some user interface details and Microsoft’s efforts to synchronize a user’s content across multiple devices. Of interest here is the “universal app” concept, that is, applications that run on all Windows 10 hardware.
  • More detail on new features users will experience, such as a merging of the user interfaces of Windows 7 and Windows 8; a bit about Office for Windows 10; and the new browser, Spartan, that will complement, and eventually replace, Internet Explorer. Especially intriguing is Microsoft’s HoloLens, a virtual reality headset that Windows 10 will support.
  • Features businesses will appreciate, including single sign-on via Active Directory, better support for identity protection and access control, and improved support for both business-owned and user-owned devices connecting to a business’ network.
  • How security has been improved from a technical standpoint, for example, provision of secure boot, threat protection, two-factor authentication, and so on.

The book contains an interesting collection of information about Windows 10, in its current beta state, in one place. Given that the product is in development, the features described may change in the production version. It would save the interested reader some time researching on the Internet to find all the details, but one suspects much of that information is out there for the dedicated searcher.
