Evaluating the productivity of a reference-based programming approach: a controlled experiment
Sturm A., Kramer O. Information and Software Technology56 (10):1390-1402,2014.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Jul 15 2015

Sturm and Kramer present a qualitative evaluation using a questionnaire approach. They investigate the applicability and efficiency of adopting application-based domain modeling (ADOM) for improving productivity in terms of code quality and development time. In their approach, ADOM is used for building reusable assets in specific domains; it consists of three layers: language, domain, and application. In the language layer, meta-models and specifications of the used language are captured. In the domain layer, the relationships between the elements built for the specifications are captured. In the application layer, the structure and behavior of the specifications are captured.

Using their questionnaire approach, the authors gathered results pertaining to productivity in terms of code quality and development time for adopting ADOM. Undergraduate students in a lab answered the questionnaires for programming time and software quality. The authors successfully conducted the experiment using the questionnaire approach, and the results show that the average programming time by adopting ADOM is less than using a pure Java environment.
