Vixie P. Communications of the ACM58 (4):42-45,2015.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Jun 9 2015

Computer and network administrators must continue to prevent ongoing security threats to enterprise hardware and software systems. What are the attacks on computers and networks that stand out? How might web server administrators prevent security attacks? Vixie discusses the practical issues and solutions to the security of web servers and networks in this well-informed article.

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assaults can indisputably deny access to real network traffic, make web servers vulnerable by endlessly responding to immaterial attack requests, and allow malware providers to understand the characteristics of hardware devices and software beyond the imaginations of end users.

The author critiques the inadequacies of firewalls and applications installed on networks to thwart intrusions. Computer applications such as the Dynamic Content Management System (DCMS) provide user-friendly editing features at the risk of exposing the inside codes of web sites to attacks from outside data. Vixie recommends auditing all components of any DCMS as a viable solution to most Trojan horse inside attacks.

Static content management systems (CMSs) offer reliable solutions to DDoS attacks. Perhaps web server administrators ought to consider static objects and codes as files shared by many viewers on networks and web sites. Should the static publication model of contents and codes be the norm at organizations concerned about friendly interfaces and security? I call on security experts and web designers to read this article and weigh in with their opinions on the thought-provoking security ideas presented. This mesmerizing article scrutinizes the tradeoffs of real-life, practical solutions to security issues.
