Model-driven development of content management systems based on Joomla
Priefer D.  ASE 2014 (Proceedings of the 29th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Automated Software Engineering, Vasteras, Sweden, Sep 15-19, 2014)911-914.2014.Type:Proceedings
Date Reviewed: Nov 5 2014

This paper describes at a high level a model-driven development (MDD) approach to extensions of a content management system (CMS) like Joomla. Through factoring models of these extensions into generic, schematically redundant, and individual components, the author aims to simplify and accelerate migration (within Joomla or across other CMSs) and extension scenarios, as well as maintenance of these extensions throughout the software life cycle.

Joomla, which implements a model-view-controller (MVC) architecture, already allows for the isolation of the specific content model from the read/write control modules. The contribution of the paper consists of the layering of the content models and of a motivational set of scenarios to justify a principled MDD approach.

Even though the discussion is kept at an abstract, motivational level, I look forward to a more concrete description of these models and how they simplify the migration process in the context of a real-world application.
