In a smart grid (SG), real-time processing of a vast amount of streaming grid data such as metered consumption or measured electric power quality is required. Since those data are continuously generated, the SG system always needs to be available, scalable, responsive, and secure. The cloud computing paradigm can be a good solution for satisfying the requirements of the SG system efficiently and effectively. The application of cloud computing for smart grids (SGCC) is being actively researched, but it is still at an immature stage.

This paper provides comprehensive information on existing SGCC research. First, it addresses the benefits of using cloud computing in SG. It also addresses challenges such as security, heterogeneity, and recovery. Next, the benefits and challenges are analyzed over various cloud services and types. The architectures and layers of existing SGCC applications are explained thoroughly.

Suitable as an introduction, this paper covers a wide range of SGCC applications from a general perspective. A more serious reader would need a paper that is more focused with a more critical perspective.
