Robotics and artificial intelligence: a perspective on deliberation functions
Ingrand F., Ghallab M. AI Communications27 (1):63-80,2014.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Sep 12 2014

In the authors’ words, in this short review paper, deliberation functions concern “purposeful, chosen or planned actions [understood both algorithmically and through actuators], carried out in order to achieve some objectives.” The deliberation functions of interest in this work are planning, acting (in the physical sense, that is, through actuators), perceiving, monitoring, and goal reasoning. Acting is by far the most discussed deliberation function as the point of idea exchange for robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). Research about acting, according to the authors, has been done through several approaches: procedure based, automata based, logic based, communicating sequential processes (CSP) based (concurrency and synchronization with exogenous events), and stochastic based.

At the end of the paper, the problem of integration is discussed. It may be approached with several types of architectures: reactive, hierarchical, and teleo-reactive. The last is a sort of combination of the former, using different resolutions in time to take consequent actions.

The authors admit that they didn’t include (but probably would have liked to) metareasoning, interaction and social behavior, and learning among the deliberation functions; they do give a short description of each, though.

This is such a good work that it deserves a second part where the authors can explain the issues that couldn’t be written down, or maybe a far lengthier paper altogether.

The work is so understandable that I would recommend it to anyone, from advanced engineering students to researchers in the specialized topics, with the goal of having one possible unifying view on the crossroads between robotics and AI.
