Security and privacy in mobile social networks
Liang X., Lu R., Lin X., Shen X., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2013. 105 pp. Type: Book (978-1-461488-56-9)
Date Reviewed: Jul 21 2014

Security and privacy are two important issues in social networks. With the expansion of mobile devices, such as smartphones, access to social networks has become almost constant. This convergence of smartphones and social networking produces a context in which security and privacy become extremely important.

This book, divided into four chapters, approaches the topic from a research perspective. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to mobile social networking (MSN), the research topics in this area, and the security primitives that form the basis of the security solutions provided. This chapter is suitable for any type of reader as an introduction to the topic.

The next three chapters are dedicated to the three research topics that the book covers: profile-matching protocols with anonymity-enhancing techniques (chapter 2), cooperative data forwarding strategies with privacy preservation (chapter 3), and recommendation-based trustworthy service evaluation (chapter 4). Each follows a typical format seen in research literature: the problem is presented, followed by the presentation of the solutions proposed by the authors, and concluding with a comparison with related work and conclusions. The chapters are well motivated and presented.

The book approaches an interesting issue from a research perspective. It is recommended for researchers interested in security and privacy concerns in mobile social networks.
