Digital republic : India’s rise to IT power
Joseph M., Power-Publishers, 2013. 173 pp. Type: Book
Date Reviewed: Apr 30 2014

This book is as much about the rise of India as an information technology (IT) power as it is an autobiography of a fine Indian computer scientist (Mathai Joseph). Indeed, the rise of India as an IT power started by the year 2000, but the book begins the story in the 1960s when the author was an undergraduate in India.

The first chapters contain interesting anecdotes and political opinions, leading to the introduction of computing content by way of the author’s graduate studies in the UK. Computing history in India is said to have developed in the same way it occurred in several other countries, such as the US and France a couple of decades earlier--it was strongly tied to the development of atomic power, first for war and later for energy production.

The book contains a fine account of the state of computing in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s, when the author spent time as graduate student in Cardiff and Cambridge and later as a professor at Warwick. His time in the US at Carnegie Mellon is also discussed. The reader should be aware that this entertaining introduction and biography is told from an idiosyncratic point of view. It is not the official story of computing in India, something that I might have been expecting based on the title, yet I was not disappointed by the book’s story.
