Spatial data on the Web : modeling and management

Spatial data is defined as pieces of information describing quantitative or qualitative properties that refer to space. Such properties can be represented as attributes of a set of objects, or as functions of the space locations (for example, the humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, and so on measured at a given location on the American continent). Spatial properties are included in several application contexts requiring the management of very large data sets in computer-aided design (CAD), very large-scale integration (VLSI), robotics, and image processing. Mainly, spatial data appears in geographical applications; it is the motivation for the development of various technologies, and represents the most challenging application environment [1].

Geographical data has two components: the spatial component (information about the shape, extension, location, and orientation of an object on the Earth’s surface), and the nonspatial component (describing other properties of the considered object, for example the name of the object). This book is focused on spatial geographical data in geographical applications that is used to describe objects, natural phenomena, and human activities occurring on the Earth’s surface. The complexity of the spatial components raises many issues concerning data integration, and many challenges regarding new applications and services that should be designed and implemented. The key developments, directions, and challenges concerning representation, integration, protection, and innovative applications of geographical and spatial data in distributed environments are presented.

The book is organized into four parts. The first part addresses modeling and processing issues for geographical and spatial data in distributed environments, such as spatiotemporal data representation, and multi-resolution and multi-scale data representation and processing. The second part is devoted to integration issues for spatial data sources, such as geographical information fusion, mediator systems, data quality in integration systems, and similarity-based processing over multi-resolution maps. The security issues for spatial data, such as access control, secure outsourcing, and information hiding, are addressed in the third part. Finally, the fourth part discusses innovative applications of spatial data for mobile devices.

The book could be used as a reference book for senior undergraduate or graduate courses on geographical information systems that have a special focus on the Web, as well as on heterogeneous and distributed systems. It would also be useful for technologists, managers, and developers who want to know more about emerging trends in geographical and spatial data management.
