Object-oriented databases
Gray P. (ed), Kulkarni K., Paton N., Prentice-Hall, Inc., Upper Saddle River, NJ, 1992. Type: Book (9780136302032)
Date Reviewed: Jun 1 1993

Object-oriented databases were recently invented as the result of the interaction of two independent fields: programming languages and databases. Object-oriented databases involve a large number of important issues, so different perspectives are possible, and no consensus has been reached even on definitions or on which features are essential. Gray, Kulkarni, and Paton take one of the possible points of view and present a development of object-oriented database systems as an evolution of systems based on semantic data models.

The book is based on the authors’ research, which includes the implementation of prototype systems. The final chapters are devoted to the description of two systems, P/FDM and ADAM, developed by the authors. The first part of the book is more general; it contains a tutorial on semantic data modeling (with a detailed description of the functional data model, which is the basis for P/FDM), persistent programming languages, and object-oriented concepts. The chapter on object orientation includes a brief survey of the major object-oriented languages and database systems.

The book is mainly intended for researchers and technical developers, and it is definitely satisfactory for this audience. The first five chapters can serve as a useful reference. The final chapters are more closely related to the authors’ research and are probably less interesting for a wide audience. The book could also be used as a textbook for a graduate course, but this would require access to the systems developed by the authors.

The book is well written and conveys a number of ideas within a reasonable length. The index and bibliography are adequate. I consider this book a useful reference for all researchers, developers, and graduate students interested in object-oriented databases or related fields.
