This book is a step-by-step discussion of how to successfully install a new system with concise guidelines on personnel considerations, training procedures, and converting to a new system. This is a sequel to Curry and Bonner’s previous book [1].
The entire text is written as a chronology of events in the history of the mythical ABC Hardware Company. It asssumes the company has selected the software (either written in-house or purchased from a vendor). While the previous book is not required reading, it does detail the selection and purchase of software. Once the software has been selected, how will it be implemented? What does implementation of software mean? After the answers are understood, Sam Thompson, who is chosen to be the project leader, must create an atmosphere of acceptance of the conversion from a manual to an automated process. ABC Hardware has not had a computer system previously. Sam and his staff must become familiar with the hardware when it arrives and find a place to locate it. At the same time, staff members are assigned to read the application and hardware operating system documentation to insure a smooth installation. Sam must put together the special needs of the company: What special reports will be needed? Who will write them? How will the data be converted? Finally, end-user training, paralleling the old procedures, and a review of the implementation are discussed.
This text is intended for the nontechnical manager contemplating the installation of a micro or minicomputer-based system. The Glossary is very good for the nontechnical individual. The Index is quite complete. The figures (diagrams) are well done and presented at the appropriate time for maximum understanding.
As previously stated, this is the second in a series of texts for the small businessman. One can only assume that Curry and Bonner will continue this series with topics for the experienced user. While this text is not a “must” for the bookshelf, at $9.95 it could serve well in a public library or for persons getting ready to implement their first system.
