Eric is Associate Editor-in-Chief of Computing Reviews, in
which role he chairs the Best Review Award Committee which
since 1988 has annually selected the best book review published
by CR in the previous year. As Contributing Editor of the
IEEE Annals of the History of Computing he contributes short
articles, reviews manuscripts, encourages computing pioneers
to write about the past, and helps potential authors who are
literacy-challenged.
He has participated in ACM's publishing program since 1961
as a writer, editor, and appointed officer. He was the first
chairman of ACM's Publication Board. IEEE and its predecessors
have published his writings from time to time since 1941.
He became a volunteer editor of Annals in 1980 and served
as its Biographies Editor for sixteen years. From 1965 to
1988 he wrote and edited seven computing college textbooks,
all but the most recent now out of print.
He received ACM's Distinguished Service Award in 1978 and,
as a consequence, became an ACM Fellow in 1994. As a Senior
Life Member of IEEE he is required to critically evaluate
the Institute's performance.
