After early retirement from the University in 1996, positions at the Information Technologies Research Institue of the Marmara Research Center of TUBITAK (Turkish Science and Technical Research Council) in Turkey. Membership in several NATO groups on simulation. Return to Canada July 2001. Currently, active in research and in professional organizations.

Research Interests: (1) Applications of artificial intelligence in modelling and simulation as well as in software engineering (e.g., fuzzy software agents with personality, program understanding); (2) Advanced methodology and environments for modelling and simulation; (3) Software systems engineering; (4) Reliability and quality assurance in modelling and simulation (including V), software engineering, user/system interfaces, as well as professional ethics for sustainable civilized behavior (for humans as well as for software agents). Publications: over 325. Involvement in conferences and seminars: Contributions in nearly 300 conferences and seminars held in 27 countries. Memberships to numerous International Program Committees. Several Conference/Program Chairmanships of International Conferences. Since 1990 alone over 70 invited talks. In the 2000s over 30 active involvements in conferences and seminars.

Education: Highschool: Galatasaray Lisesi (founded in Istanbul, Turkey in 1481) (1955), Master in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul (1960), and Ph.D. in Systems Engineering at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ (1971).

Honors: Invitations from United Nations; sponsorship from NATO; and fellowships, scholarships, or sponsorships in 11 countries: Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Turkey, and the USA. Over 20 Who's Who citations including: Who's Who in the World (Marquis); Who's Who in Science and Engineering (Marquis); Most Admired Men and Women of the Year (The American Biographical Institute); and Men of Achievement (Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England).

Awards: "Recognition of Service Award" from ACM (In recognition for his contribution to the Association for Computing Machinery as SIGSIM Chair, 1982-83); "Information Age Award" -from the Turkish Ministry of Culture (1991); "Scientist of the Year Award in 1996 in Gebze," Turkey (1997); and "Successful Projects of 1998 Award" Marmara Research Center, Turkey (1999).

  Model Mapping Using Formalism Extensions
Caplat G., Sourrouille J. IEEE Software 22(2): 44-51, 2005.  Type: Article

This is a solid contribution to a very important aspect of software engineering. In declarative programming, the specification of what needs to be computerized is expressed in a high-level and platform-independent modeling language, an...

A taxonomy of computer-based simulations and its mapping to parallel and distributed systems simulation tools
Sulistio A., Yeo C., Buyya R. Software--Practice & Experience 34(7): 653-673, 2004.  Type: Article

A good review of ten simulation tools for parallel and distributed systems is presented in this paper. The reviewed systems are: SimOS, SimJava, NS-2, Parsec, GloMoSim, Bricks, GridSim, MicroGrid, SimGrid, and Ptolemy II. The paper can...

Properties of hybrid systems--a computer science perspective
Stauner T. Formal Methods in System Design 24(3): 223-259, 2004.  Type: Article

In this paper, properties of mixed discrete and continuous systems are clarified for computer scientists, to help them to have a good grasp of corresponding control theory concepts. This authoritatively well-written paper is based on t...

Further towards a taxonomy of agent-based simulation models in environmental management
Hare M., Deadman P. Mathematics and Computers in Simulation 64(1): 25-40, 2004.  Type: Article, Reviews: (2 of 2)

Six requirements for the classification of simulation studies of environmental management that are implemented using agent technology are elaborated on in this paper. The requirements are: coupling social and environmental models, micr...

A conceptual model completely independent of the implementation paradigm
Dieste O., Genero M., Juristo N., Maté J., Moreno A. Journal of Systems and Software 68(3): 183-198, 2003.  Type: Article

This clearly written paper is based on the recent dissertation of the first author. The motivation for the study arose from two shortcomings of the current practice of requirements engineering (RE): currently used conceptual models (CM...
